How To : Stage Plot

What is a stage plot?

A stage plot is a document made, usually for a live setting such as concert, which visually shows where each performer and piece of gear is positioned on stage.

Why do you need to know what stage plot is?

Stage plots are usually made for sound engineers, lighting technicians, and stagehands to use when setting up a stage. It’s likely you’ll need to follow a stage plot at some point - you may also need to make one if you work closely with a band or artist.

Now we know what a stage plot is, how it’s used, and why you need to understand them, we can begin to break them down a little more. To do this, we’ll look at an example ;

This example shows;

  • the positions of the instruments

  • the positions of microphones

  • the positions of stage monitors

  • where power and, if neccesarry, DI boxes are needed (with the use of a key)

Most stage plots will also be accompanied by an equipment list (rider) which will further specify technical requirements.

This is everything that you’d need to include in the creation of a stage plot, and hopefully you would know how to understand one now too.
