Lily Powell

Lily Powell is a sound engineer, music producer, and the founder of Compressher - an organisation born from her drive to make the music tech industry more inclusive, diverse, and empowering for women. Her journey began at sixteen, when a group of supportive teachers recognised her passion and gave her the tools and freedom to explore music production. From experimenting in her school’s studio to mixing live events, Lily quickly found herself immersed in a world that both inspired and challenged her.

Fuelled by curiosity and creativity, Lily went on to earn a degree in Music Production and Sound Engineering, eventually working professionally across live events, festivals, studios, and theatre. But through it all, she couldn't ignore the reality: she was often the only woman in the room. After countless conversations with others who felt the same isolation, Lily made a decision - she wouldn't just be part of the industry, but she'd help to change it.

That decision became Compressher - a space dedicated to educating, uplifting, and inspiring the next generation of women in music technology and production.

Below is a snapshot of Lily’s industry experience across live events, studio sessions, theatre, and independent projects.

Industry Experience

  • With a strong foundation in live sound, I’ve spent the past three years working as a sound engineer at the music festival Summer By The River, where I’ve mixed a wide range of artists—most notably during the BBC Introducing nights. My live experience extends to venues like The Boileroom in Guildford, where I’ve supported emerging talent in an intimate gig setting. In addition, I’ve worked freelance across diverse environments, from Coulsdon Carnival to various churches, adapting my skills to suit different genres, spaces, and audiences. These experiences have shaped my technical confidence and deepened my passion for delivering high-quality live sound.

  • While I’ve never been formally employed by a studio, I’ve gained hands-on experience and mentorship at the world-renowned Metropolis Studios. Working alongside seasoned engineers, I assisted on full band recording sessions as well as focused vocal tracking—learning the intricacies of high-end studio workflows. These experiences sharpened my technical skills, deepened my understanding of studio dynamics, and helped me build lasting relationships with the team at Metropolis, who continue to support and inspire my journey.

  • My experience as a sound engineer in theatre has given me a whole new perspective on live audio. I’ve worked on two full-scale productions—Mary Poppins and Matilda—where I learned the unique demands of theatrical sound. From managing a range of microphones to live mixing for speech, singing, and orchestra-style band arrangements, I quickly adapted to the precision and timing required in this environment. Theatre taught me how to balance clarity and emotion in sound—skills that continue to enhance my work across all areas of audio production.

  • Beyond my professional work, I’ve always been driven to create on my own terms. I’ve spent countless hours in the studio writing, producing, and collaborating with emerging artists—sharpening my creative and technical skills through hands-on experimentation. One of my most ambitious projects to date is SSL Sessions—a self-led series where I took full control: scouting talent, managing logistics, engineering live recordings, mixing the audio, and editing the video content to bring the sessions to life. Working under pressure to deliver a polished, professional outcome taught me invaluable lessons in leadership, creativity, and resilience. You can still find the SSL Sessions online on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@SSLSessions)
